George Russell Pins Mexican GP Qualifying Near-Miss on Extra Fuel Lap
Mercedes' George Russell narrowly missed pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix, attributing the difference to an additional fuel lap during qualifying.
According to Motorsport.com - Formula 1 - Stories, George Russell came within 0.009 seconds of securing pole position for the Mexican Grand Prix but ultimately lost out to Lewis Hamilton, his former teammate and seven-time world champion. Russell identified that an extra lap carrying fuel during his final qualifying run was a costly decision.
Unlike Russell, his rivals, including Hamilton, skipped preparation laps on their final Q3 attempts, which may have contributed to their marginally better times. Russell will start alongside Hamilton on the front row, with Charles Leclerc qualifying third.
This close qualifying result highlights the fine margins in Formula 1 and the strategic choices drivers and teams make during sessions that can impact starting positions significantly.
